Auto chooses a model for each message you send, so you can focus on the work instead of the model picker. Quick questions can go to a faster model, and demanding work can go to a stronger model with more reasoning.
Auto is rolling out to accounts gradually. If Auto is not at the top of your model picker yet, it has not reached your account. Named models work the same way they always have.

How Auto chooses

Before each reply, Auto reads your latest message along with the recent conversation. It judges what kind of task it is, such as a quick question, writing, coding, math, data analysis, or research, and how demanding the task is. Then it picks a model and a reasoning level suited to that kind of work.
  • Auto chooses from models Babbily has approved for that kind of work. The models Auto can use, and how it ranks them, can change as Babbily adds and tests models.
  • When Auto cannot see everything that shapes the task, it uses a dependable default instead of guessing. This happens when your message includes a file, when you work in a project, when you select a skill, or when a Canvas artifact is open.
  • Choosing is a separate, quick step before the reply starts. A dedicated model reviews the text of your message and recent conversation to classify the task. Babbily does not charge your API usage budget for this step.
Auto chooses one message at a time. If you need the same model for every reply, or you want to set Fast mode or reasoning effort yourself, choose a named model instead.

Use Auto

1

Open the model picker

Select the model pill in the composer. Its tooltip reads Select model.
2

Choose Auto

Auto appears at the top of the list, above the named models.
3

Send your message

Auto picks a model for this reply. Each later message gets its own choice.
When Auto is available for your account:
  • New chats start on Auto. This includes new chats you start from the home screen, a project, News, or Finance.
  • Existing chats keep their model. A chat that used a named model stays on that model until you change it. Your choice is saved with each chat.
  • Your named-model settings are kept. Babbily remembers your last named model and reasoning effort. If you switch back to that same model, its Fast mode setting is also as you left it, so check the lightning control before you send if you do not want the faster path, which uses more of your API usage budget. Choosing a different named model turns Fast mode off.

See which models answered

Individual replies are not labeled with a model. Instead, an Auto chat shows Auto · Models used: below the composer, followed by every model that has written a reply in that chat. Replies that failed without any output are not listed. In the sidebar and Library, Auto chats show the Auto icon instead of a model icon. Like every model, Auto can make mistakes. Double-check important answers.

Controls while Auto is selected

Files, projects, and other context

  • Attachments. You can attach any supported file. When a message includes a file, Auto uses its dependable default for that reply rather than judging the task from your text alone. See file attachments.
  • Projects and skills. Project instructions, project knowledge, and selected skills load after the model is chosen, so Auto uses its dependable default in project chats and when you select a skill. See Projects.
  • Canvas. When a Canvas artifact is open, Auto uses its dependable default so the artifact’s content is taken into account.
  • Temporary Chat. Auto picks a model with enough room for the whole conversation, because Temporary Chat does not summarize older messages.
  • Long chats. A change of answering model does not make Babbily summarize your chat. The context indicator measures against the smallest context window among the models Auto can use. See context window.

Retry, edit, and stop

  • Retry and Edit message choose again, so the new reply can come from a different model.
  • Changing the model picker while a reply is running affects only later replies.
  • Choosing Stop while Auto is still choosing cancels the reply. Babbily does not send a fallback reply.

API usage budget

  • Choosing a model does not use your API usage budget.
  • The reply does. Replies, tools, and file reading count toward your budget at the rates of the model Auto picked, so usage can vary from message to message.
  • When your remaining budget runs low, Auto favors models that use less of it. It still chooses only among approved models.
When your budget is used up, Auto stops the same way named models do. See API usage budget.

Where Auto is not available

  • Translate. Translate has its own model list. Continue in chat opens with the Translate model selected. See Translate.
  • Scheduled Tasks. Scheduled Tasks run on the named model you choose. See Scheduled Tasks.
Auto is available in Babbily on the web, including mobile browsers and Babbily added to your iPhone or iPad Home Screen.

When a model you used is retired

If the named model in your chat leaves the model picker and Auto is available for your account, Babbily switches the chat to Auto and shows a notice such as:
Nothing is resent automatically. If your last message did not get a reply, choose Retry to send it again with Auto. If you prefer a specific model, choose it from the picker instead. See removed models and alternatives.

Troubleshooting

Auto is rolling out gradually, so it may not be available for your account yet. It also does not appear in Translate or Scheduled Tasks. Refresh the page if you expect to have it. Named models keep working in the meantime.
If you see Auto is temporarily unavailable for this request. Choose a named model and try again., no approved model could handle that specific request, often because of a selected tool or skill. Choose a named model from the picker and send again. If you see Auto is temporarily unavailable. Choose a named model., Auto is paused for your account. Choose a named model to keep working, then check the picker again later.
Auto chooses for each message based on the task, how demanding it is, and your remaining API usage budget. Check Auto · Models used: to see which models answered. To keep one model for the whole chat, choose that model in the picker.
Choose a named model that supports the control you want. Fast mode and Reasoning effort appear again as soon as you leave Auto.
